Some considerations to take into account are the fact that adult children are not with their parents every day so when they do see them they don’t necessarily get the whole picture. For example, if they only get together for the major holidays and they see their parents drinking, they could be disillusioned and think their parents only drink on the holidays. Once the mental health professional receives a full picture and can conclude that the patient is an adult child of an alcoholic then it is important to recognize and tackle a lot of the issues that connect their past to their current problems.
